The Charlotte 49ers, despite missing one of their top players, cruised to their third consecutive Atlantic 10 golf championship, finishing 23 strokes ahead of Dayton.

Charlotte, ranked fifth nationally, receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA championships, where the 49ers tied for third last season. It will be the 49ers' fourth straight NCAA appearance.

"The senior class that we have has carried this team since the day they got here," said coach Jamie Green. "They have made a difference in this program like not too many players have."

The 49ers shot a 3-under 285 on Sunday's final day at the par-72 Panther Lake course at the Orange County National Golf Center. One of the 49ers' top players, Trevor Murphy, skipped the tournament to compete in the Wachovia Championship.

Dayton junior Rob Chappell beat Charlotte sophomore Cory Nagy by one stroke to claim individual honors. Charlotte had three players finish among the top 10.

Green earned his third consecutive coach of the year award in a vote of the league's coaches. Jonas Enander Hedin, Nagy and Stefan Wiedergruen were named to the all-conference team.
