Robbery suspect remains at large

Bank robbery suspect Taj Pittman.

Taj Pittman, the suspected bank robber whose attempted apprehension by the FBI on Wednesday resulted in gunfire and a traffic jam on East Independence Boulevard, was still at large Thursday night.

He had been arrested Nov. 21 in Charlotte for a bank robbery in Kannapolis. But he posted $110,000 bond and was released from a Cabarrus County jail on Tuesday.

The FBI had new warrants for him, involving at least three other bank robberies in Cabarrus and Stanly counties.

Agents tried to serve those warrants Wednesday at the McAlpine Ridge apartments, near Krefeld Drive. It's unclear why federal warrants weren't filed and served on Pittman while he was in custody for nearly two weeks.

Police at the scene said Pittman tried to escape in a vehicle and nearly ran down an FBI agent. An agent fired at least one shot at the fleeing suspect.

FBI spokeswoman Amy Thoreson said no one was hit and that Pittman should be considered armed and dangerous.
