Kidnapped woman OK; 2 arrested

It was just a driver license checkpoint, but police got a lot more than they expected overnight -- including an apparent kidnapping, the recovery of a stolen vehicle, and a pair of chases.

When it all ended, two suspects were in custody, and the apparent kidnapping victim was OK.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say it began about 1:30 a.m., when a white Honda CRX approached the checkpoint on West Sugar Creek Road near Reagan Drive, not far from Interstate 85.

Police say that as the Honda approached, they heard a woman inside the vehicle screaming for help. The Honda CRV then ran through the checkpoint and raced away. Police say the driver of the vehicle drove at speeds more than 90 mph in fleeing from police.

Police followed the vehicle into west Charlotte, on Hoskins Road near Hovis Road, but the suspects and the Honda got away. Several officers remained in the area, and they spotted the vehicle a short time later. That set off a second chase, but this time, the vehicle was stopped and two occupants arrested, about 3:30 a.m.

That is when police learned that the two suspects had released the kidnap victim a short time after the original checkpoint.

No injuries were reported. Police say the Honda CRV had been reported stolen several days ago.
