2 teens killed in S.C. crashes

Crashes on roads in Berkeley and Horry counties claimed the lives of two teenagers this weekend, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

A Myrtle Beach teen died Sunday from injuries she received in a Friday night car crash, said Lance Cpl. Bob Beres with the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Cassady Jones, often known as Cassady Jones-French, was a 17-year-old cheerleader for the Socastee High School Braves football team. She was riding with two other teens around 8:30 p.m. Friday when their car crashed on Harbour Towne Drive, near the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, said Horry County Coroner Robert Edge.

Robert Johnson, 16, of Andrews, died Sunday after being injured in a one-car crash Saturday on U.S. 17-A, said Berkeley County Deputy Coroner Bill Salisbury.

Johnson was riding in a 2000 Mazda van. Neither Johnson nor the driver wore seat belts, Beres said.

The driver was not seriously injured and the investigation is continuing , Beres said.

No charges have been filed in either of the collisions.

"It is too soon to tell whether either involved alcohol," Beres said.

Jones was remembered as a good student who excelled at Socastee High, said Principal Paul Browning.

She was state vice president of Distributive Education Classes of America, he said.

Counselors will be at Socastee High School early Monday to talk with students, Browning said.

Extra counselors are arriving from other schools to talk with students, he said.

"Cassady was a cheerleader and was a very popular student," Browning said.

"She was a very bright kid."

Her stepfather, Greg French, coaches girls' soccer and teaches science at Socastee High.

Her mother, Kelly French, is an art teacher at Socastee High, Browning said.

Jones worked on media relations projects for DECA, said Tina Durham, executive director of S.C. DECA.

She was elected to office last February, during a state conference.

"Cassady worked on devising a plan for our whole state," Durham said.

"She had a heart for trying to communicate and trying to get the story out about people.

"She was a bright, creative young lady. It is really tragic."
