Acclaimed Southern voice takes on Sept. 11

But Gilchrist's tale of sisters and cousins seems to lose its way at times

The “Dangerous Age” in Ellen Gilchrist's new novel is the one we live in: seven years past 9-11, five years into a divisive war that has claimed more than 4,000 American lives and rolls on with no end in sight.

REVIEW

'Miss Lillian,' through a son's eyes

Jimmy Carter recounts his mother's accomplishments as a nurse, Peace Corps volunteer and role model.

In Jimmy Carter's tribute to the woman the country knew as "Miss Lillian," the former president packs a full life into a slim volume. "A Remarkable Mother" tells the story of a woman who played a pivotal role in her family's lives.
