New Fort Mill family festival includes car show with `sound-off'

If you drive near downtown Fort Mill Saturday, expect to hear thunder.
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., White and Main streets will be home to the area's newest family festival: Fort Mill Thunder.
The event includes a car show, motorcycle charity ride, bluegrass music, a kid's area, vendors and food.
Koss MotorSports will present the car show. Fans of "The Dukes of Hazzard" can check out The General Lee, along with the police car used in that television show. A National Guard Hummer and the Randy Smith Race Car will also make an appearance. An SPL league sound-off will entertain those who like to hear a car's "thunder." Call 803-320-3193 for car show details.
More than 100 motorcyclists from several states will participate in a noon charity ride. The entry fee is a donation to the Fort Mill Care Center. All items will be placed on a flatbed truck and delivered to the center after the festival. Bring something for the Care Center -- canned goods, cleaning/hygiene supplies, gift cards or cash donations.
Questions? Call 803-548-3100.
Three bands will provide bluegrass "thunder." National Heritage Award recipient Wayne Henderson is scheduled to perform, along with Ridgehill and Deeper Shade of Blue.
Kids can climb the National Guard rock wall and play in the bounce house.

Move Fort Mill Forward, a community volunteer organization, is presenting Fort Mill Thunder. MFMF's mission is to help improve the look, feel and experience of the downtown area. Event co-chairs Mari-Ann Taylor and Twila Koss hope that the festival will encourage people to visit downtown.
"We want to help revitalize downtown and make it the heart of Fort Mill again," said office manager Carol Dixon.
"The revitalization is coming," said Chip Smith, MFMF chairman. "All the talk and planned development of the downtown area will bring people back."
Individuals and businesses are encouraged to join MFMF and attend its bi-monthly board meetings. Get an application at www.MoveFortMillForward.com.
The MFMF office relocated last week to the little red caboose on White Street. Stop by and see Dixon and the other volunteers, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays, or call them at 803-547-1002.
