N.C. Governor's School attendees

Several students from Gaston and Lincoln counties were recently selected to attend N.C. Governor's School this summer.Governor's School is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically or intellectually gifted high school students in the nation. Six-week sessions for 400 students each are held at Salem College and Meredith College.

National Board Certification

Twenty-six Gaston County teachers recently earned National Board Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. The educators were honored for meeting the rigorous standards at a recent reception at the Schiele Museum.

A total of 222 Gaston County public school teachers now hold the prestigious designation.

Gould selected for UNC program

Sierra Gould of East Gaston High School was recently selected to participate in an expenses-paid college program on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill.

North Gaston band `superior'

North Gaston High School's Concert Band earned a "superior" rating, the highest possible, at the N.C. State Concert Band Festival on March 18. It was the first time in 10 years the band earned the honor at the state festival.The band also won the school's first "superior" rating in a decade at a marching festival and the school's first band championship earlier this year.

Tim Reed is North Gaston's band director.

In other music news, North Gaston's Mixed Choir recently earned an "excellent" rating at the N.C. Music Educators Association Regional Choral Festival.

Cathy Baker is North Gaston's choral director.

Panther Revue Talent Show

Pleasant Ridge Elementary School's Student Council recently sponsored the Panther Revue Talent Show.

Layne earns perfect SAT writing score

Kristen Layne, a junior in the manufacturing/engineering pathway at Highland School of Technology, recently scored a perfect 800 on the writing portion of the SAT. Her overall score was 2300 out of 2400.

College Notes

Austin wins Athena Scholarship Award

Patsy Ann Austin of Gastonia has won the 2008 Citizens South Athena Scholarship Award.

Austin left high school to work in a cotton mill. Born without a right hand, she learned to operate every machine in the factory during her 21-year career. Austin's accomplishments earned her the Handicapped Worker of the Year Award in 1987.

After moving to another company that later downsized, Austin returned to school through Gaston College's GED program. She is currently enrolled in a credit program at the college and will complete Certified Nursing Aide II and Medication Aide Certification this summer. school Roundup Leigh
