Spring is here: Step outside and enjoy nature's gifts

It's time for flowers, kids' outdoor sports and plenty of walks

CHIP JOHNSTON

In Mount Holly, like everywhere else, winter has finally given way to spring.

Flowers are blooming, grass is growing -- a little too much for some of us -- and the kids are enjoying the extra playtime outside, thanks to the longer days. Adults in neighborhoods, such as my own Woodland Park, are taking advantage of the extra daylight to catch up on yard work and for their daily walks.

Woodland Park has always been a walker's paradise, evidenced by the number of neighbors walking by my home daily.

Recent rains have eased drought conditions and returned Dutchman's Creek and the Catawba River to normal levels, with boaters and fishermen returning to the water.

Youth baseball and soccer teams have taken to the fields, offering kids another chance to burn off excess energy and have some healthy competition.

While we haven't been able to turn the heat completely off just yet, we are using it a lot less, mainly to knock out early morning chills. Soon, the heat will be replaced by air conditioning.

During this time of warmer weather and longer days, I have some suggestions: turn off the TV, get outside, and take advantage of it! Chances are you'll feel better, and the extra quality time spent with your family can only be positive.

Happy springtime. Chip
