FROM THE EDITORIAL PAGE:
  • Community must combat gun violence

Deterrence should begin long before a teenager pulls a gun.

Two brothers, ages 17 and 18, will be buried in Charlotte Monday, gunned down together while walking to a convenience store. Neither lived a perfect life. Nor did the 17-year-old accused of killing them.

  • Conflict at Kitty Hawk

Plus extra added attractions: Catfish, ‘Cadillac Ranch' and Freedom (for some) Park.

    1. Contrary to plans, the 1928 silver anniversary commemoration of the Wright Brothers' first flight at Kitty Hawk didn't feature a fly-over by squadrons of Naval airships from Virginia. Why?

  • Have the Easleys lost touch with the people?

In these challenging times, leadership by example matters.

Mary Easley, North Carolina's first lady, is a smart, capable woman whose intellect and record of public service would bring her success regardless of whether she was married to the state's top elected official.

  • Observer Forum: Letters to the Editor

It's not surprising our prosecutors won't discuss why they dropped earlier armed robbery charges against the accused in this case.

YOUNG VOICES

  • Offshore drilling for oil?

    Q. President Bush has called for lifting a ban on drilling for gas and oil on U.S. shorelines.Should such drilling be allowed? Do the benefits outweigh any potential problems?

Haleigh Foster, 15, Weddington High School, Weddington: It's about time to start accessing whatever resources are available to Americans for our fuel needs. We are far too dependent on others for many resources, oil being at the top of the list. Our nation demands an endless supply of a commodity that we are unwilling to produce. That's why we are literally paying more for it every day. Natural landscapes are a luxury. Energy production has become a necessity.

FROM THE VIEWPOINT PAGE:
  • Sweeping problems under the rug

It is one of our fondest political myths that elections allow us collectively to settle the “big issues.”

  • Reverence for service goes AWOL

I have no idea when reverence fled these shores. That it did, however, seems obvious.

  • Obama changes course – again

You'll notice Barack Obama is now wearing a flag pin. Again. During the primary campaign, he refused to, explaining that he'd worn one after 9-11 but then stopped because it “became a substitute for, I think, true patriotism.”

First Lady Mary Easley: First in pay, first in travel, first in the pockets of her countrymen.

The world changed, but he was ‘the same old Helms'

It has been strange, these past few years, to live in a North Carolina where its best-known political orator and social critic was silent after a long career of commenting on all things.
